Lovegrove Ltd is a sole-practitioner independent civil and geotechnical consultancy based on Mr Lovegrove's 35 years' experience in these disciplines, more than 20 of which have been in Hong Kong. The firm offers specialist civil and geotechnical engineering advice to the legal profession, owners, developers, consultants, contractors and insurers.

Background

The firm is based on Mr Lovegrove's experience in 7 countries between 1964 and 1976 and in Hong Kong since 1976. His main responsibilities during this time are listed below.

  • Director of a major firm of international consulting engineers in Hong Kong for about 10 years until his retirement in 1998. During this time he was responsible for multi-disciplinary planning studies, including the new West Kowloon urban area (330Ha) and Tung Chung & Tai Ho (future population over 400,000), and for the design and implementation of urban infrastructure projects valued at over $8 billion, including West Kowloon and Tung Chung New Town.
  • 500Ha of reclamation involving: 70M m3 hydraulically placed fill; 35M m3 dredging; 5km vertical seawalls; 15km revetment seawalls; 2,100m piers and berths; and 10,000km vertical drains (to shorten settlement times). Projects included West Kowloon, Tung Chung New Town, Lantau Port Development, North Lantau Highway and Stonecutters Mid-Stream Operations Site.
  • Cuttings in soil and rock up to 120m high, embankments up to 30m high (North Lantau Highway, Route 5 tunnel approaches).
  • Landslip preventive and remedial studies and works for about 500 slopes, including Sau Mau Ping.
  • Foundations for major bridges and buildings including HK International Airport Terminal Building.
  • Underground station and running tunnels (City Hall Station, Singapore).
  • Geotechnical aspects of tunnels for highways and sewage transfer totalling about 40km in length.
  • Geotechnical aspects of submarine watermains and sewage outfalls totalling about 15km.
  • Geotechnical aspects of 400Ha reclamation and infrastructure for Tin Shui Wai New Town.
  • Implementation of 3.5km fabric reinforced road embankment on very soft foundations.
  • Geotechnical design and implementation of 150km highway in wet tropical conditions in Fiji including high cut and fill slopes in wet residual soil, embankments on very soft foundations, friction piles for major bridges, borrow area and quarry development and operation.
  • Geotechnical investigation and design for Falkland Islands Airport and for extensions to airports in Lebanon, Jordan and Fiji.
  • Foundations for Thames Tidal Defences (UK).
  • Deep excavations for water transfer pumping stations and china clay stores (UK).
  • Geotechnical aspects of motorways and docks (East Cross Route, M5 spur and Bristol West Dock, UK).

Lovegrove Ltd (since establishment in 1998)

Lovegrove Ltd has provided civil and geotechnical engineering evidence for arbitration, litigation and judicial review proceedings. It has also advised: owners of a new container terminal on reclamation; owners and end-users of two new theme parks on reclamation and site formation; consultants, contractors and insurers on problems with piles, de-watering and slope stability.
